Precept 9: To Help Them see That Everyone is Motivated, However Misguidedly, by the Same soul-craving for Satchidananda
Satchidananda
The blessings of this month’s image come from a vision I experienced, where I saw three crosses. This image resonates with my continued personal journey developing meaningful relationships with funeral directors, ministers, and crematorium staff. Through these connections, I have come to see how the concept of Satchidananda applies to our shared work. Sat - Truth, absolute being, or existence; Chid - Consciousness, understanding, or the knowing aspect of being; and Ananda - Bliss, pure happiness, or joy.
Funerals hold a unique and sacred place in the human experience, where we witness the sacred transition between life and death. Where together in unity, we navigate the delicate balance of honouring the departed, comforting the bereaved family, and ensuring a peaceful transition.
From this shared space, the essence of Satchidananda can be viewed in this way. The absolute truth (Sat) of life and death, the consciousness (Chid) of the sacredness of these moments, empathy and understanding, and the joy, bliss (Ananda) that can emerge from compassionate service that we offer.
This reflection has deepened my gratitude and appreciation for the sacred work that I have been apart of and the universal spiritual currents that connect us all, regardless of the words we use to describe them. It reminds me that whether we consciously believe it, or not, that beyond language, beyond words, we have the shared human longing, the same soul-craving for truth, understanding, and happiness, that Satchidananda gently guides us along the winding spiral paths of our lives.
Aum Peace Amen
